FAQ

How is the kintsugi repair done?
The broken pieces of the repair are cleaned and adhered back together with mugi urushi, then set to cure in the muro box. When cured the mugi urushi is sanded and sabi urushi is applied, sanded, and cured in successive layers until the joins are smooth. Mugi and sabi urushi are distinct mixtures of urushi lacquer and natural food-safe binders, such as wheat and rice flour, and tonoko powder, that result in a robust binding material for a long-lasting repair.

After the final layer of sabi urushi has cured, successive layers of finishing urushi lacquer is carefully applied to the joins. Again, each layer cures in the muro box with the final layer having metal powder (24k gold for food-use items) applied. The metal powders used in kintsugi repair; gold and other precious metals, are specifically made for kintsugi and present in varying grain sizes referred to as keshifun and marufun. The repair is put into the muro box to cure for the final time

The muro box is maintained at a specific and constant heat and humidity level to ensure the proper curing of the urushi lacquers used in the repair. This process not only ensures the proper curing of the urushi but is an exercise in patience that is reflective of the process of kintsugi repair. Items take many weeks to months or even years to repair as the process of repair is slow and methodical requiring a patient and quiet mindset.

I am always happy to talk kintsugi so if you have any questions about my products specifically or kintsugi in general feel free to contact me via the contact page.

Is kintsugi food-safe?
Yes, traditional kintsugi is considered food safe because it uses urushi, a natural lacquer resin obtained from the sap of the urushi tree. This material has been used for centuries in Japan to mend pottery and coat food-use wood products. When properly applied and fully cured, it is regarded as non-toxic and safe for contact with food or drink. Gold that is 22.7k+ is also food safe. I use 24k gold exclusively for food-use items.

Is kintsugi dishwasher, microwave or oven safe?
No, the intense heat from a microwave or oven can damage the repair. Your kintsugi item is best handwashed to preserve the integrity of the repair, especially with frequently used items.

Is my vessel water-fast?
Urushi creates a resilient and long-lasting seal. All vessels in my shop have been tested for water fastness; matcha bowls, tea-cups, mugs, vases etc.
