24k Gold Vintage Kintsugi Matcha Bowl
This beautiful vintage Raku-ware chawan is a captivating addition to any tea ceremony. While the artist remains unknown, the bowl dates to the postwar Showa period (1926–1989), carrying with it a quiet sense of history and tradition.
The rim sustained significant damage, along with minor wear to the interior, all of which has been carefully restored using traditional kintsugi techniques and genuine 24k gold. The result is a striking balance between imperfection and refinement, enhancing the chawan’s character and presence.
A timeless vessel, this bowl is sure to elevate your tea practice with its quiet beauty and rich sense of heritage.
Raku ware is a type of pottery that is usually made without a wheel, formed only with the hands and a spatula according to a method called "hand kneading," then fired at 750℃- 1,100℃ and softly glazed. In reflection of the aesthetics of Sen no Rikyu and his contemporaries, its characteristics include slight distortions from hand-kneading and a thick form. The vintage and antique items in my shop are sourced from several different antique dealers in Japan.

The repair has been carried out with exceptional care, patience, and precision. I use only traditional kintsugi techniques (no epoxy and mica powder); natural urushi lacquers are cured in a muro box and 24k gold for food vessels, both of which are food safe. I also use genuine silver, copper and brass (as well as gold) for repairs not being used for food or drink. All vessels in my shop (matcha bowl, tea cup/pot, Ikebana/vase, mugs, tumblers etc.) have been tested for water fastness.
